The contract: Haulage

Bis provided load, off road haulage and stockpile management services to Roy Hill’s mine site operations.

Specifically, it was responsible for handling 8mtpa of direct shipping ore into and within the stockyard.

Utilising an innovative haulage fleet tailored to the site’s operational requirements, the equipment solution was designed by Bis’ in-house innovation and engineering team.

Customer operations

Roy Hill is an independent iron ore operation with West Australian majority ownership. Operations at Roy Hill’s Pilbara mine commenced in 2014. It currently produces 60 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa)*.

With integrated mine, rail and port facilities, operations consist of a:

  • conventional open pit, bulk mining operation from multiple production benches
  • wet processing plant
  • 344km single line, heavy haul railway
  • purpose built, dedicated two berth iron ore port facility at Port Hedland, capable of receiving, stockpiling, screening and exporting 55Mtpa (wet) of direct shipped iron ore as lump and fines.

Roy Hill loaded its first shipment of ore for export in December 2015 and now loads shipments to its key markets in Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan.

    There were approximately 50 Bis employees working on the Roy Hill contract.

    T1250 prime movers with 140T payload side tipper trailers, Komatsu WA900 loaders (including the first WA900-8 units in Australia), 60,000L water tanker trailer, 16M grader, support and service trucks, purpose built three bay workshop – including a dedicated tyre bay.

  • Technology


    The fleet utilised Trifecta in-cab AI monitoring system.

Key project achievements

  • Expedited mobilisation - implementation of operations occurred within 8 weeks of contract execution.
  • Delivery of innovative haulage solution in a condensed timeframe.
    • the solution had the ability to operate in the stockyard and haulage over a lead distance of 8km.
  • Provided additional capacity during a major processing plant shutdown within six weeks of contract commencement.
  • The project utilised Bis’ new Trifecta in-cab AI monitoring system:
    • Trifecta increases driver safety by providing real time vehicle and in-cabin monitoring of driver fatigue and distractions.
    • it collects, analyse and report driver behaviours such as drowsiness, mobile phone use, smartwatch use, smoking, seatbelt and other violations.
    • Trifecta profiles ‘learn’ over time and pre-empt high risk fatigue or distraction behaviours in real time to the operator via message alerts. Alerts are also shared with driver supervisors.
    • Trifecta was developed by EDGE3 Technologies and Bis.
